My Bridge Book

·        Editing not yet perfect and it is a whole book in one page (3MB+), it might take some time to download (3-5min.) and navigate. Navigating is easier if it is done by using Scroll Bar and/or PageUp, PageDown buttons; but when LINKs are used it takes some time for the pointer to jump to the desired location. So, be patient.

Site-related improvements :

1.June.2000 and afterwards :          After some comments from my readers and friends on some display problems I have worked quite hard on the site again and made quite a lot of changes, improvements, tidying up; and keep making changes. I think it is much better now than the first upload / version.

            Problems :

--Some friends and readers told me that Column type texts can lose their configuration. The lines move to the right or left in an irregular way and even spoil the next line, in certain situations creating a mess there. I believe this is a problem of  “Font Substitution of Windows”,  because Windows substitutes the original font with a similar one at the receiving PC if they don’t have exactly the same font set. I used in my original book a special font set from the TIMES NEW ROMAN FAMILY which has "Turkish Accented Characters" too in it. Possibly nobody at the receiving end has got this font. I noticed on a friend's printout sent to me that a substitution had been made with COURIER. Courier uses more space because it is a non-proportional characters set, and this causes the lines to become longer so that they do not fit in the space provided. The odd thing here is that Windows used Courier instead of a Font Set from the same TIMES family. If it had used one from the same TIMES Family, most probably this problem wouldn't have arisen.

My solution : Changing the fonts used from TUR versions into regular versions doesn’t work and it creates squares which represent the empty spaces in the character map instead of characters themselves, because these characters haven’t been recognised.  So, I have created tables for all these types of places and put those types of texts into tables by leaving more blank spaces in them as well, so that when they are substituted by the larger characters they will find enough room to fit in.

--Only one reader wrote to me that she was having the symbols of  ( §  ¨   ©  ª  ) instead of suit symbols.  I found out that she was having   § as §  ;  ¨  as  ¨ ;   ©  as  ©   and   ª  as  ª .

Possibly this is another joke of  "Font Substitution".  Suit symbols are provided by the Symbol Font Set, and the others are available in almost every Font set. Although they are at the same locations and they carry the same ANSI numbers in the Character Map why should they be transferred to the others when every PC has the Symbol Font Set as part of the main configuration. This beats me. If there is anybody out there who can explain and solve this I would be happy and grateful.

-- I think, another big problem arises from "Converting documents into HTML language / Internet language". My book’s pages were written as part of  Word Processing and they carried DOC extension not HTML. When we  created my site with the whole of my book we didn’t write the whole book  again in HTML language, and we didn’t use an HTML program either. We  created the site by using the ability / the feature of WORD2000 on converting the .DOC s into HTML. We didn't use the HTML language ourselves directly, WORD did it for us. But a Word Processor's HTML language doesn't really do the job as well as it could have been done by HTML language itself ; as we all see now.

If anybody is interested,  "MS WORD HELP" gives more information about this matter under the title of :

"What happens when I save a document as a WEB PAGE ?"

*Some formatting to be removed and some features will be disabled and changes will occur in these areas  i.e.  *Character Formatting ; *Paragraph formatting ; *Page Layout ; *Editing ; *Graphic Formatting ; *Asian Text Formatting ; *Table Formatting ;  *Web Page Formatting;  and each of these subjects has variations and detailed explanations.

More improvements :

March.2001 and afterwards :

--Some friends and readers of  “My Bridge Book” on the Internet have been reporting to me that they couldn’t see any errors other than some minor / unimportant things and that everything looked OK.

Neverthless, others have said that some lines of some boards in the “Hands Section” were sliding into other hands, making it difficult to identify the hands.

It looks as if every machine / PC is behaving differently, according to their particular structure and configuration.

I have therefore changed many elements in the formatting of the “Hand Tables”, in an effort to  “fix”  them. I hope that they are now more acceptable for more people.  Let’s see !
