"My Bridge Book" by Mr. Rami Aydin.

Mr Aydin, a founder member of Devizes Bridge Club, has enterprisingly written a pocket sized £4.99 and following an excellent review by Simon Ainger in the magazine "Bridge" which has brought the book attention of wider audience. Mr Aydin is hopeful that a publisher may be interested. Enquiries to Mr Aydin on 01380 722719.

MY BRIDGE BOOK

by I Rami Aydin Published privately at £4.99

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this pocket-sized bridge miscellany which is a compendium of notes compiled over a period of time by an ordinary, but hugely enthusiastic, bridge player who, with the encouragement of his friends, has decided that, despite not being able to interest a publisher, he should share his thoughts in print. The fact that English is not the author's native language is no disadvantage since it gives his writing a refreshingly uninhibited, if slightly quirky, style. The author plays his own interpretation of Acol and has no time for complex artificial conventions or the major competitions where they flourish. Indeed, he gave up bridge in his home city, Ankara, in the 1970s because "there was a new boom in Systems and conventions and pretentious players were springing up all over the place". He concluded that there was no time both to learn the complex conventions in fashion and also run a business. The Multi was not worth a pharmacy! However, the intention of the book, although made more readable by the flavour of the author's approach to the game, is, to give advice about its serious side and to divert with its lighter side. In its 180 pages there are all manner of things about bridge: its history, tips and tactics, movements, laws and ethics, jokes, hands and much more. Although it is made clear that it is only what the author finds satisfactory, I would advise caution against taking his version of Acol as good practice. A requirement that you can only open a 4-card suit if it contains 4+ HCPs, and can only respond in a 4-card suit if it is Q 10 x x or better, seems to add unwanted complications. Also, I can't make any sense of the advice, for a duplicate player, to add a distributional point if you have a hand with four Aces. Deduct a point would be more to my liking, but the idea may have come from the honours bonus available for a no-trump contract in rubber bridge.

I am thoroughly enjoying your book, It is a great achievement to have put together such a compact list of such a complicated game. I am really pleased to be able to play with you.
